You Just Never Know

I'll never forget the early morning I woke up and heard water running. It sounded like it was coming from the bathtub, I turned the water on and then off and the running water sound was still messing with my ears.
As a sleep deprived new mom, I went back to bed. A couple hours later, it was actually time to get up. The water running sound was still happening. Now, being a bit more alert, I knew I needed to figure out the source.

Upon going downstairs, and walking into the utility room the water was dripping. Panic was setting in. What are we going to do?
Thinking fast, I located the main water valve and shut it off. By this time, I was already thankful that we were home and able to find this leak before major damage occurred. A quick calculation told me it had to have happened in the last 5 hours or so.
A couple phone calls later, we were on the list for a plumber to come out and take a look. What could have been a emergency turned into an inconvenience. The leak was repaired, the bill was paid and we would worry about fixing the large cut out in the stairway at a later date.
Having an emergency fund or extra cash stashed away for the unknown expenses that come up make a difference. Being able to focus on the problem at hand and not focused on the cost (although asking for a ballpark estimate is always a good idea) allows you to make the best decision, not just the cheapest decision.
